ABSTRACT
Introduction: Oligospermia is an important factor in the etiology of male infertility, according to reports from global reproduction centers. Its treatment is a challenge for specialists.
Objective: Evaluate the result of catgut implantation in acupuncture points in the treatment of oligospermia.
Methods:v A pre-experimental study was conducted in the 74 male patients treated due to oligospermia with no favorable results with conventional therapeutics. They were attended in the Infertility consultation of "Mariana Grajales" Ginecobstetric University Hospital in Santa Clara, Villa Clara province, from February 2018 to February 2020. The sample included those who accepted catgut implantation as a traditional medical treatment.
Results: Patients aged between 20 and 40 years (52:70.2%), white skin (47:63.5%) prevailed. Those who consumed alcoholic beverages or smoked predominated. Most of them 64 (86.5%) had both toxic habits. Before traditional treatment (32:43.2%) they suffered from severe oligospermia; (24:32,4%) had it moderate, and (18:24.3%) had mild one. After the first treatment cycle, 27 patients were cured. After the second, another 12 were cured and eight abandoned the treatment. At the end of the third and fourth treatment cycles, six and three patients were cured, respectively. 48 patients were cured, including 100%, 87.5% and 28.1% of those with mild, moderate and severe oligospermia, respectively.
Conclusions: More than 60% of cured patients confirmed that catgut implantation is effective in the alternative treatment of oligospermia.
