ABSTRACT
Introduction: fractures caused by different causes, whether traumatic or pathological, occur relatively frequently in the general population, and constitute one of the causes of admissions to hospital Orthopedics and Traumatology services. Objective: to determine the prevalence of fractures in the surgical service of the Roosevelt Hospital between 2012 and 2019. Method: a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted, with data from those discharged for fractures in the surgical service of the Roosevelt Hospital from 2012-2019. Variables were operationalized to achieve the objective. The principle of data confidentiality was complied with. Variables were summarized with absolute and relative frequency distributions; prevalence was calculated overall and for group of locations. Results: the prevalence of fractures was 197 per thousand admissions to the hospital surgical service. There was a predominance of fractures in the male sex (70%). In both sexes there was a higher frequency of fractures in the upper limbs (41.5%) followed by the lower limbs (37%). Within the first group, fractures of the arm bones predominated, while within the second group, fractures of the arm bones were more frequent. Conclusion: the Roosevelt Hospital is a public hospital and a national reference. It receives one fifth of its admissions for fractures in surgical services, which generates a health problem worthy of being analyzed to identify its causes.REFERENCES
