ABSTRACT
Borna disease virus (BV), first described in southern Germany as a fatal neurological disease of horses and sheep, owes its name to the town of Borna near Leipzig in Saxony. It is the only member that includes the families Filoviridae, Paramyxoviridae, and Rhabdoviridae. Four strains are known: Borna, Borna HE/80, Borna No/98 and Borna H1766. BV can infect a wide variety of vertebrates. The presence of the virus in animals has been described in central and northern Europe, Japan, Australia and the United States. Symptoms of BV: fever, headache, shivering, asthenia, anorexia, colic, constipation, abdominal pain, ataxia, dysuria, thrombotic phenomena, behavioral disturbances, vertigo and gait instability.
