ABSTRACT

Introduction: Rugoscopy studies the morphological characteristics of palatal rugae by preparing an identorugogram. This study aims to establish a database of rugoscopic patterns in individuals from three departments of Nicaragua, in order to define individualizing characteristics of each population, and perform a comparative analysis of the rugoscopic patterns found.
Methodological design: descriptive cross-sectional study. A systematic stratified random sampling was used, the final sample being: 87 individuals from the departments under study. Descriptive and statistical Chi-square analysis was performed. Analysis unit: palatal roughness, recorded by intraoral photography in a controlled environment. These were processed with Adobe Photoshop S6, in order to define the shape and position with the magnetic lasso tool, and then extract the identorugogram using the Basauri method.
Results: 1170 rugae were recorded. The most predominant forms in each department were: Puerto Cabezas: sinuous (30.71%), Chinandega: sinuous (25.16%), Matagalpa: curved (33.07%). Papilla type: Simple (89.6% of the population). The department with the highest number of average rugae per individual was Matagalpa (14). The Chi-square analysis showed significant differences between the rugae of the individuals from Puerto Cabezas compared to the other departments.
