ABSTRACT
Weight stigma can be defined as rejection and social denigration suffered by people
who do not follow the prevailing social norms about weight and body shape, these
are visible and specific characteristics that cannot be hidden and that can lead to
negative attitudes, stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination, which, added to
the problems associated with overweight and obesity lead, to a series of negative
consequences for the health of people affected. The stigma of weight far from influencing
its decrease can exacerbate it, for this reason, it is important to address the
problem of overweight from a comprehensive perspective and promote initiatives
in the medical and social context, for preventing stigma and discrimination against
people with this condition.
