ABSTRACT
Introduction. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder, characterized by alterations of social interaction, communication and restricted and repetitive behaviour.
Methods. A descriptive study was carried out with a cross section design. The universe consisted of 65 children and teenager sunder 19 years old from the Autism School of Havana from November 2015 to October 2017. A bibliographical and documental revision was made in order to search forinformation about the topicin question. Summary measures were used for qualitative and quantitative variables.
Results. 73,8 % of the subjectswere male and 44,6 % corresponded to the 10 - 14 age group. According to the epidemiologicalstatus,72,3 % belongs to Group III. The research shows periodontal disease accounts for 80%. Moderate gingivitis was the most relevant with 46,1%, followed in decreasing order by 33,8% of patients suffering from dental caries and 23,1% with malocclusion. Oral hygiene turned out to be moderate in 64,6% of the cases and 60,0% of the subjects showed signs of frequent intake of sugary foods. Non transmissible chronics disease indicated a particular importance to bronchial asthma with 10.8%.
Conclusions. Male prevalence was observed, as well as patients belonging to Group III. Periodontal disease prevailed at the expense of moderate gingivitis. Most students practiced an inadequate oral hygiene and their consumption of sugary foods in a variety of ways was quite remarkable. Bronchial asthma proved to be the most relevant among non-transmissible diseases.
