ABSTRACT
Introduction: Cataracts are highly prevalent in patients over 60 years old. The treatment is surgery and posterior capsule opacity (PCO) is the most common late complication. At present, it is very popular to use Nd-YAG laser to treat this condition. Objective: To evaluate the results of posterior Yag laser capsulotomy, in the Ophtalmological Center at Lucía Íñiguez Landín Hospital from Holguín.
Method: A prospective and observational study was carried out in patients who had PCO and were treated with Nd-YAG laser at the Ophtalmological Center, from January to June 2017. The sample was composed by 131 patients who were treated during this study period, to whom a form was applied to collect the data. The results were assessed according to the improvement of visual sharpness and the presence of complications.
Results: The predominance was for the 60-69 age group (41.9%) and the male sex in 58.7% of the cases. The most frequent previous medical problems were: hypertension in 58 patients and ametropia in 50 patients. In 42% of the cases, the right eye was the most treated. In 93.3% of the patients, the visual sharpness improved after treatment from 0.6 to 1.0 and in 2% of the cases, a temporary ocular hypertension appeared as a complication.
Conclusions: The treatment with Nd-YAG laser for PCO, improves vision in most of the cases, with a minimum of complications.
