ABSTRACT
Legumes can engage in symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing bacteria. This symbiosis allows
legumes to grow with little to no nitrogen fertilizers inputs and replenishes the soil
with fixed nitrogen (e.g., ammonium) for subsequent crops through crop rotation.
Symbiotic nitrogen fixation is an energy-demanding process for the legume host.
Because of the high carbon demand, legumes tightly regulate the number of rhizobial
infections and the number of nodules per plant. Here, we review the state-of-theart
of genetic programs underlying the fine regulation of the number of nodules in
legumes. We also raise different questions that must be experimentally validated to
understand better how legumes have retained through their evolution the ability to
engage in symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing bacteria without hampering their growth
and development.
