ABSTRACT
Introduction: Congenital malformations (CM) are any structural or functional anomaly that occur during intrauterine life. The WHO establishes that 303,000 newborns die from this cause every year. Background: Currently there isn´t much information on the prevalence of CM in Mexico and Jalisco. Data from Secretaria de Salud de Jalisco indicates that during the period from 2015 to 2018, 29.3% of deaths of children under one year were reported due to CM, deformities and chromosomal malformations. Objectives: Crosssectional descriptive study. To describe the prevalence of CM during the years from 2015-2018 in the state of Jalisco. Method: The database from Secretaria de Salud de Jalisco from 2015-2018 was used, which includes information from 126 municipalities in the state of Jalisco. The study population was limited to fetuses and newborns with CM diagnosed during the early neonatal period. Results: A prevalence of 7,300 births with CM was reported with a distribution of 58% men and 42% female. The 10 municipalities with the highest prevalence of CM are listed, as well as the 3 most common malformations in the state of Jalisco. The city with the highest prevalence was Guadalajara and among the most frequent CM we identify the cryptorchidism, polydactyly and unspecifi ed Down syndrome. Conclusion: Creating prevention strategies that are included within our health care system will result in the reduction of cases and therefore lower neonatal, infant and even maternal mortality.REFERENCES
