ABSTRACT
Pulmonary embolism is a condition that causes around 100,000 deaths annually, where a timely diagnosis and management are essential to prevent a fatal outcome. Recently, there has been a tendency to avoid the use of unnecessary studies during the diagnostic approach; for this purpose, multiple clinical probability scales have been created, such as the Wells scale, on which the initial approach to be chosen is based. On the other hand, D-dimer and chest computed tomography angiography play an important role in excluding or confirming this diagnosis. There are mortality risk stratification scales that can guide the treatment, the fundamental pillar being anticoagulation, and in high-risk cases, fibrinolysis. Other more advanced therapies include catheter-guided thrombolysis and surgical or catheter-guided embolectomy, which are used in selected cases.REFERENCES
