ABSTRACT
Introduction: Sleep is a vital physiological process for health, which allows optimal functioning during the day. It contributes to the development of learning, attention and memory processes. Sleep deprivation and sleep disorders are currently some of the main health problems and pose a challenge in its detection, both for the physician and the patient.
Objective: To evaluate the sleep quality of students of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FCS) of the Pedagogical and Technological University of Colombia (UPTC) during mandatory preventive isolation (APO) secondary to the COVID 19 pandemic in the year 2020.
Methods: Analytical, cross-sectional study. The Pittsburgh sleep quality index, Colombian version (ICSP-VC) was used. Data collection was performed using Google form, during mandatory preventive isolation, it was disseminated through WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger application groups. A descriptive analysis was made of quantitative variables, using measures of central tendency; and of qualitative variables, using absolute and relative frequencies. Likewise, Epi Info and Stata v.14 programs were used to process the data.
Results: 39.8 % of the students of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the Pedagogical and Technological University of Colombia were considered good sleepers, 60.2 % had alterations in at least two components of sleep quality and 21.3 % had alterations in four or more components.
Conclusions: Students of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the Pedagogical and Technological University of Colombia tend to present a sleep quality that categorizes them as poor sleepers and need some type of medical attention or treatment, despite the fact that the results found were lower than other previously reported studies.
