ABSTRACT
Introduction: Cervical ectopic pregnancy is a rare complication that results from trophoblast implantation in the cervical canal and it is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, and significant compromise of future fertility. Diagnosis is generally late and, in most cases, it is made in the operating room. Objective: To describe the clinical case of a patient with an eight-week cervical ectopic pregnancy successfully treated by total abdominal hysterectomy.
Case report: A 40-year-old patient came to the emergency service of Ramón González Coro Hospital, Havana, Cuba, referred from her health area for having positive pregnancy test, scarce vaginal bleeding and ultrasound reported an abortion in progress. In the hospital, an emergency transvaginal ultrasound was performed, which described a gestational sac in the cervical canal, and an 8.5- week embryo, with heartbeat. A total abdominal hysterectomy was performed without complications and the piece was sent to pathology. The histopathological report confirmed the presence of cervical ectopic pregnancy.
Conclusions: The early diagnosis of cervical ectopic pregnancy can be suspected by the present risk factors and the clinical examination, and it was confirmed by vaginal ultrasonography. Treatment will depend on the clinical conditions, gestational age of the product and parity of the patient.
