ABSTRACT
Objective: To report two cases with an unusual variant of multiple sclerosis, from a clinical, imaging and electrophysiological point of view.
Clinical case reports: Two patients from the same family are reported with an unusual variant of multiple sclerosis. Magnetic resonance imaging (IMR) (3T) was performed on them using T1, T2 and FLAIR weighted sequences; neurophysiological study, which included visual, auditory and somatosensory evoked potentials; as well as conventional and quantitative electroencephalogram. In addition, the data of other members of the family were collected. The members of the family affected with multiple sclerosis exhibited similar alterations in the studies, such as typical imaging alterations of multiple sclerosis, prolongation of P100 in the visual evoked potential, slow and paroxysmal activity in the electroencephalogram, and presence of oligoclonal bands in the study of cerebrospinal fluid. Moderate involvement of the disease was found, which can be distinguished from sporadic forms.
Conclusions: Cases with family multiple sclerosis have similar clinical, imaging and electrophysiological characteristics, which could be differentiated from cases with sporadic multiple sclerosis.
