ABSTRACT
At the Otolaryngology Division of the “Dr. Manuel Gea Gonzalez” General Hospital 27 records of patients with the diagnosis of Ludwig’s angina hospitalized between January 1996 to December 2000 were analyzed. The age distribution was from 16 to 72 years. With a male female relation of 2:1, 48.1% (13 patients) belong to a middle socioeconomic level. The primary source of infection was odontogenic in 23 patients (85.1%). The 100% of patients received surgical drainage within the 12 hours after their hospital access. With incisions between 0.5 to 5cm. The most common antibiotic combination used was clindamicin with penicillin G. More than a half of patients 51.8% (14 patients) were in the hospital for 6 days or less. 62.9% (17 patients) also have other pathogenic factors: 6 patients (22.2%) had parapharyngeal abscess, 5 patients (18.%) had diabetes mellitus type 2. Tracheotomy was realized in 8 patients (29.6%). There were no major complications like mediastinitis, septic shock or death.
