ABSTRACT
The most common complication of diabetic mellitus is diabetic neuropathy, representing the most important cause of morbidity and mortality associated to this chronic disease. The prevalence of this disorder increases after the onset of diabetes mellitus trough the years; Sima and Sugigoto postulated that the prevalence is near 100%, if we consider the subclinic not symptomatic neuropathy. Diabetic neuropathy is a heterogeneous and complex group of diseases, the distal, symmetric and sensorial polyneuropathy associated with autonomic neuropathy is the most frequent clinical expression. The clinical manifestations can be grouped as follows: the quickly reversible and the chronic syndromes. The last ones we can topographically subgroup them in symmetrical, local, and multilocal. The most common admission cause at the hospitals (talking of diabetic patients) is still being the diabetic foot, where polyneuropathy is an important cofactor. The mortality increases wen it is associated an autonomical component (25 to 50% in 5 to 10 years). The pathophysiology of this disorder is multifactorial. We will suggest a few clinical and structural therapeutic measures that could be useful in this kind of patients.
