ABSTRACT
Food allergy is a frequent health problem among the pediatric population. Despite many studies, the epidemiology is not accurate due to lack of discrimination between a true allergy and an adverse reaction to food. IgE is not responsible for all food allergies as there are other hypersensitivity mechanisms involved. The clinical presentation depends on the digestive tract segment involved. Eosinophilic esophagitis, allergic enteritis and allergic proctocolitis are good examples of this pathology. Diagnosis is made clinically, supported by laboratory tests and tolerance trials. The most helpful treatment is the exclusion diet. At present there is no medication that will allow an allergic patient to be tolerant to an allergen.
