Values education of future health professionals

ABSTRACT
Introduction: values are characteristic principles of the human species, which guide man in his conduct, feelings and sense of what is right.Objective: to characterize the education in values in the students of the Cuban medical sciences.
Methods: a bibliographic review was carried out on information sources available in Spanish, specifically Cuban scientific journals and from some Latin American countries, on education in values in university students. The search strategy included a review of the databases in Spanish CUMED, ScieLO and Lilacs. Descriptors in health sciences were used as keywords in the search: social values, medical education and medical students.
Development: the professors of the medical sciences careers must transmit to their students a transforming thought of the information into knowledge for the good professional exercise. University management must obey an education in values that allows qualifying a greater number of competent people, with constructive critical judgment, capable of thinking creatively, and with leadership skills.
Conclusions: the education in values that is developed in the context of Cuban medical sciences is characterized by being systematic, intentional and integrated, and responding to the education and development of the personality of the future health professional. It is forged through the curricular and extracurricular aspects of the student's training, and continues throughout professional life. As a process, it is planned, organized, directed, controlled and evaluated by the professionals responsible for it.
