ABSTRACT
Radiotherapy induced morphea is a rare complication of unknown etiology, which is diagnosed through exclusion and managed with unstandardized treatment. A 51-year-old woman with a past medical history of rheumatoid arthritis and breast cancer arrived at our clinic due to localized burning pain of the left breast with warm erythematous thickening of the skin, peau d'orange, non-pitting edema and nipple retraction three months after concluding her last radiotherapy session. She was treated with antibiotic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs without improvement. We took a biopsy of the lesion and they reported fibrosis in the dermis and subcutaneous cellular tissue, atrophy of hair follicles and absence of adnexa, findings highly suggestive of morphea induced by radiotherapy. When recurrence was ruled out, we started topical treatment with steroids and systemic anti-inflammatory drugs, notably improving the condition.
