ABSTRACT
Introduction: Nosocomial infections impact health and quality of life, they increase hospital stay, as well as use of diagnostic and therapeutic resources; but, they can be preventable. Goal: To characterize nosocomial infections in patients of the CIREN Children's Neurology Clinic. Methods: A retrospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted between january 2007 to december 2018. 110 patients with nosocomial infection were included: age, sex, neurological diagnosis, system affected by nosocomial infection, complementary studies, isolated germs, indicated treatment and number of infections were selected. The information was acquired through medical records, and from report of the Hospital Infections Committee. The independence test was performed with the Chi square statistic, with a significance level of 0.05. Results: Nosocomial infection predominated in children aged 1 to 5 years (64.5%), with an average age of 5.5 years. The male sex prevailed with 75 (68.2%). The most frequent neurological condition was cerebral palsy (32.7%). The respiratory system was the most affected with 75 patients (68.2%). Bacteriological and chest X-ray studies were the most indicated, with 60% and 20% respectively. The most isolated germs were different types of staphylococci and Escherichia coli. The most commonly used antibiotic was azithromycin (13.6%). The presence of a single infection was evident in 102 patients (92.7%). Conclusions: Low rates of cross infection were reported, related to the high quality of hospital care provided. Respiratory infections were more frequents in patients treated with benzodiazepines (p = 0.03). Genitourinary system infections were associated with intermittent catheterization, since the largest number of patients who presented it, in all this procedure was present (p = 0.000).REFERENCES
