ABSTRACT
Our objective was to test frequency of emotional disorder in a sample group of patients with chronic renal insufficiency (CRI) due to diabetic nephropathy with an ex post facto transversal study. In this study, we typified each particularity concerning this problem. Subjects who participated in this study consisted of 100 patients seen at the Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis Program at an
Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) Hospital in San Luis Potosí State in central Mexico. Diagnosis of diabetic nephropathy was carried out by the patients’ own personal physicians, who referred the patients to our Hospital. Presence of emotional disorder was measured with the GHQ-28 instrument (General Health Questionnaire); the validated and reliable standardized version in Spanish was used in this study. The dependant variable to consider was evaluation of the index of emotional disorder estimated by means of the GHQ-28 scale, while independent variables were sociodemographic aspects and chronic degenerative condition of complications due to diabetic nephropathy. Results showed that 86 % of the studied sample of patients with diabetic nephropathy dealt with a level of emotional disorder; patients with >10 years of diagnosis with type 2 diabetes mellitus had greater risk of having greater risk of diabetic nephropathy. The conclusion is that emotional disorder in patients due to diabetic nephropathy is high and is associated with degenerative evolution of this health problem. The importance of medical and nursing intervention is underscored in this type of patient.
