ABSTRACT
Introduction: Infectious corneal ulcer is a frequent disease in ophthalmology consultations. It threatens the structural integrity of the eye. Objective: To describe the clinical-epidemiological characteristics of patients with severe corneal ulcer.
Methods: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in 92 patients with severe corneal ulcer admitted to the ophthalmology service of Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso General Hospital, in the period from January, 2018 to December, 2019. The variables studied were age, sex, origin, occupation, clinical forms, location, predisposing factors, microorganisms, and complications. For the statistical analysis, absolute frequency and percentage were used, together with mean and standard deviation. Furthermore, the proportions comparison hypothesis test was used with a significance level of 0.05.
Results: The average age was 52.2±18.5. There was a predominance of the male sex (68.5%) and rural origin (60.9%). Trauma of plant origin (28.3%) was the most frequent predisposing factor. The most representative clinical form was stromal ulcer (66.3%), with central location. In 83.6% of the cultures, microbiological growth was obtained, with a predominance of Pseudomonas. Only 15.2% of the patients were complicated.
Conclusions: Severe corneal ulcer is a serious eye health concern and must be treated quickly. Microbiological studies are vital in order to direct drug therapy to improve visual outcomes and decrease visual impairment.
