ABSTRACT
Objective. To determine the social representation of trans* people in Cuban cinema, in the period 2000-2019. Methodology. It is based on the qualitative paradigm of the research, and the application of theoretic and empiric methods. An analysis of content was carried out to the main Cuban films that approach the trans* in the period 2000-2019, and interviews were applied to specialists in sexuality and cinema, and to trans* people. Results. In Cuban cinema, from 2000 to 2019 a social representation of a stereotyped hegemonic transsexuality is manifested because it reproduces and sometimes contrasts with the patriarchal prevailing ideology, shown as codes like the construction of gender, the sexual orientation, and clothing. A polemic representation is shown to a lesser extent. The discrimination of gender identity, transphobia, social isolation, incomprehension, violence and marginality are mostly evidenced. According to specialists and trans* people, the film image is a stereotyped and stigmatized representation which differ from the wide social spectrum of the trans* as repressed popular. Conclusions. Social representations of the trans* is crystallized in cinema as images of the repressed popular, resulting in historical inequality relationships reproduced by patriarchal societies.REFERENCES
