ABSTRACT
Keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KOT), formerly known as odontogenic keratocyst has unique features including locally aggressive behavior, high recurrence rate and distinct histological appearance. KOT is one of the most common odontogenic neoplasms of the jaw, representing about 12 and 14% of all odontogenic cysts of the jaws. Its behavior presents potential for local destruction and extension into tissues, rapid growth and higher recurrence rate. This paper aims to describe a case of KOT in a female patient, whose intraoral physical examination revealed a bulging of the buccal and lingual bone cortices and a slight diastema between teeth 31, 32 and 41. We opted for enucleation of the cystic capsule, which was performed by local curettage and peripheral ostectomy for complete excision of the lesion, in order to minimize possible recurrences. We believe that to achieve the lowest possible morbidity, resections should be reserved for multiple recurrent lesions and possibly in syndromic cases. However, to achieve the lowest recurrence, enucleation with application of Carnoy's solution or cryotherapy or peripheral ostectomy is the first-line treatment for primary KOTs.REFERENCES
