ABSTRACT
Introduction: Today there is controversy about the influence of psychiatric comorbidity on mortality of the seriously ill patient. Objective: Describe the influence of mental disorders on the mortality of patients admitted to the intensive care unit at Dr. Agosthino Neto General Teaching Hospital in 2018.
Method: A descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional study was carried out. The study group (n = 30) was made up of patients with mental disorders and the control group (n = 30) consists of patients without these conditions. The patients who participated in each group were randomly selected. The sample size was determined by convenience. The following variables were studied: age, sex, score on admission of the APACHE II and Glasgow scales, history of psychiatric diagnosis before admission, clinical diagnosis that motivated admission, result of actions carried out in the unit (non-invasive mechanical ventilation, weaning from mechanical ventilation, central venous catheterization, sedation de-escalation, satisfactory cooperation in medical care, parenteral sedation, stay, and discharge status).
Results: It was specified that patients with mental disorders had a higher probability of death (OR = 13.0; p = 0.0000).
Conclusion: Mental disorders influence the mortality of patients admitted to the intensive care unit at Dr. Agosthino Neto General Teaching Hospital.
