ABSTRACT
The uncoupling proteins constitute an adaptative mechanism by which either energy is used for generation of heat or the respiratory chain is protected against overflow. There are at least five forms of UCPs; its distribution varies widely among them. Meanwhile, UCP-1 is expressed mainly in the brown fat, the UCP-2 and –3 are found also in the muscle. On the other hand, UCP-4 and-5 are located mainly in the brain. In this review article, the current knowledge of the function and regulation of the UCPs is described. In spite of the publication of multiple studies in this filed, there is no enough evidence to link the UCPs with the pathogenesis of obesity. However, the over-expression of some of them in the muscle protects mice against obesity and some of the components of the metabolic syndrome. The UCPs may be a future target for the treatment of obesity.
