ABSTRACT
Background: Eosinophilic esophagitis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized
by infiltration of eosinophils at the level of the esophageal epithelium and is one of
the conditions to be evaluated in adults with dysphagia and food impaction. In recent
years, there has been an increase in case reports predominantly in western medical
literature. In Colombia there are few cases reported with this condition, so there is no
clear the prevalence about this disease.
Clinical case: A 48-year-old male patient with heartburn, dysphagia and episodes of
alimentary impaction, diagnosed by antecedents, symptoms, endoscopic findings and
histological confirmation. Treatment with proton pump inhibitors and dietary restrictions
was started for four weeks with a follow-up of 6 months, with which the patient
responded satisfactorily with permanent relief of symptoms and without complications
related to the treatment.
Conclusions: In Colombia the exact prevalence of eosinophilic esophagitis is not
known; however, it is considered an emerging disease. Therefore, it should be included
in the differential diagnosis of dysphagia in adults, which allows establishing the timely
diagnosis and treatment, the relief of symptoms and, consequently, the improvement
of the patient’s quality of life.
