ABSTRACT
Introduction: The leaf extract from Carica papaya L. (papaya) is well known for its antioxidant properties. The leaves of this plant contain phenolic compounds, alkaloids, vitamins and minerals.
Objective: Evaluate the effect of the aqueous extract from papaya leaves (500 mg/kg) on mice subjected to oxidative stress induced by paracetamol.
Methods: The leaves were selected, dried, ground and subjected to extraction by infusion with distilled water at 70°C/1h. The solution was filtered and concentrated by rotary evaporation at 70ºC. The male Swiss mice received a single dose of 250 mg/kg paracetamol or water after 3 h. The animals were treated for 7 days with either extract or water. Twenty-four hours after treatment blood was extracted and the animals were sacrificed to remove the liver. The following analyses were conducted: protein carbonylation, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (lipid peroxidation), catalase, superoxide dismulase, glutathione S-transferase, reduced glutathione, ascorbic acid and biochemical parameters of blood plasma (transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, glucose and cholesterol).
Results: The extract reversed the damage caused by paracetamol to glutathione S-transferase activity, protein carbonylation and lipid peroxidation, and restored transaminase activity. The extract as of itself reduced glutathione S-transferase and ascorbic acid, serum glucose levels, cholesterol and alanine aminotransferase.
Conclusion: The aqueous extract from papaya leaves displays relevant activity with antioxidant effects. However, further research should be conducted to describe its probable antioxidant potential in more detail.
