ABSTRACT
Introduction: Morinda citrifolia L. contains compounds of great interest to drug manufacture. Evaluation of several solvents for their extraction under various operational conditions is very important for the construction of an industrial plant in the future.
Objective: evaluate the influence exerted by the main variables affecting the process of extraction upon the output, and obtain models characterizing behavior during that process.
Materials: M. citrifolia fruits were collected from the field at José Antonio Anzoátegui Polytechnic University in Venezuela. The fruits were subjected to treatment, performing extractions with ethyl acetate and 40% and 95% ethyl alcohol at laboratory-scale concentration. The solvents were evaluated at three discontinuous contact times: 24, 48 and 72 hours. Determination was made of models relating refractive index variation and pH to extraction output. A pilot study was conducted with ethyl alcohol under the same conditions as in the laboratory.
Results: alcohol is a notably better solvent at a concentration of 95%, a temperature of 40ºC and during 72 h of contact than ethyl acetate. The latter displays poor selectivity for M. citrifolia oils. The models obtained allow to predict yield in oil for a given extraction time, the logarithmic model being the one that best adjusts to the data. Solvent recovery decreases with time, and is more favorable for ethyl acetate. Pilot scale results range between 25.7% and 27.4 %, similar to the ones obtained at laboratory scale.
Conclusions: ethyl alcohol at a concentration of 95% and a temperature of 40ºC provides better extraction results. The models obtained allow to predict the behavior of the extraction process along time.
