Patent foramen ovale: problem definition and its treatment

ABSTRACT

Patent foramen ovale has been related to a series of diseases, the main among them being cerebrovascular disease, that have paradoxical embolism as a common cause. The main problem is the risk of recurrence that, in some cases, has been reported to be 33 times higher than in cases without patent foramen ovale. Treatment is still controversial among three modalities, medical treatment with platelet inhibitors and oral anticoagulation, surgery, and percutaneous closure with devices. We analyze the most recent studies on this field.
