ABSTRACT
Introduction: The atrial fibrillation is a very common cardiac rhythm disorder in medical practice. The patients that suffer this disease show disturbance in coagulation system, specially antithrombin III and fibrinogen levels.
Objective: To determine the correlation between echocardiographic image, antithrombin III and fibrinogen levels in patients with atrial fibrillation.
Methodology: The transesophagic echocardiogram, antithrombin III and fibrinogen levels were determined in 47 patients with atrial fibrillation, that were admitted in Emergency Service of Cardiology Hospital of Medical Center XXI Century.
Results: For statistics analysis for association; Student t and χ square were p‹0.05 in analysis of correlation Spearman and Pearson without correlation statistics between echocardiography and antithrombin III and fibrinogen levels. In the group of patients of less than 65 years old, 30 (63.8 %) were observed; these 4 (8.5 %) showed antithrombin III low and thrombi. In the group of more than 65 years old, there were 17 patients (36.2 %), these 3 (6.4 %) with antithrombin III low and thrombi, and 4 (8.5 %) with antithrombin III normal and thrombi. It was found that the hematocrit increased in this group formed by 5 males and 12 females.
Conclusions: The antithrombin III (88-131 %) and fibrinogen (200-400 mg/dL) do not have a statistic correlation between echocardiographics and atrial fibrillation. The low levels of antithrombin III do not have correlation between spontaneous contrast and hematocrit increase thrombosis. The increase of fibrinogen and hematocrit predominated in women.
