ABSTRACT
Over the past few years, teaching methods in medical schools have changed. The focus on ‘teacher-based’ education has shifted to a more ‘student-based’ approach, whic has introduced early exposure to a number of areas including participation in laboratory research. The object of this study was to assess the views of students regarding the suspected benefits of working for one or two years in a laboratory at an early stage in their medical studies. Six groups from the first and second year, which had been working alongside a researcher from the Faculty of Medicine, UNAM, were selected. A Lickert-based questionnaire was used and open-ended questions applied.
Results from the Lickert-based questionnaire produced an Alpha of Crombach of 0.8783, with only one factor being formed. The correlation coefficient of 0.42% showed the method to be highly relevant. This level of correlation was achieved through review of the study by the tutor with each student group, thereby allowing any uncertainties to be solved in advance.
The study concluded that a little more than 80% of the students felt that program quality depended on the ability of their tutors as well as the design of the program itself. The study confirmed that students are interested in research when they have a good tutor to support them.
