ABSTRACT
Introduction. Sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim (s/t) has different indications in acute and chronic bacterial infections in
children. Flavor of this drug is definitive for its acceptance, and for exact dose compliance and therefore the success of the
treatment.
Objective. To know the acceptance of three different brands of s/t in its liquid presentation, in a group of university students.
Population and method. Observational, prospective, comparative and blinded study. Taste and acceptance of s/t of three
commercial brands in suspension were evaluated (bactrim, ectaprim and bactropim). Forty five students were included, they
were in fasting conditions and their clinical history did not show allergy data to the drugs used or an acid-peptic and liver
diseases history. Likert scale was used for acceptance evaluation, granting a preference score on 1-5 scale. Between every
evaluation, mouthwash with water was performed. Written consent was requested from all participants.
Results. A total of 45 students participated. The average acceptance score was higher for the drug ectaprim (4.08), followed
by bactrim (3.69) and bactroprim (2.20). In the ANOVA test at least one group showed a statistically significant difference. In the
analysis by subsets, the taste of the drug bactroprim was statistically less accepted than the other drugs (p ‹0.001). Although
the taste acceptance score was higher for ectaprim, there was no statistical difference with the acceptance of the drug bactrim
(p = 0.165). No variable (age, weight, body mass index) showed a correlation with giving a higher or lower score to each drug.
Discussion. Ectaprim’s trademark had the best acceptance in 79.44%, followed by bactrim in 66.67%. The one with the worst
acceptance in 60% was bactropim. These results must be considered for the prescription of those with the best acceptance
due to their best taste in their liquid presentation.
