ABSTRACT
Introduction. Vector-borne diseases represent a health problem in Colombia and around the world. The objective of this
study was to inspect the urban and suburban area of the municipality of Nuqui to identify breeding sites and mosquitoes.
Materials and methods. Descriptive, cross-sectional study. A sample of homes in the area is selected through systematic
sampling. The houses are visited and with previous resident’s authorization, the interior and exterior of the house are checked
for mosquito breeding containers and identifying those that contain larvae. Samples of larvae were taken from the positive containers,
taken to the laboratory and once adults emerged, a morphological examination was made by an expert entomologist.
Housing, container and Breteau indexes were calculated.
Results. In the urban area, 48 houses were visited, which correspond to 9% of the municipality, and in the rural area, in the
village of Coqui, the 23 houses that exist in this territory were visited. Of the 71 houses inspected, 172 containers with collected
water were found in 61 of them, of which 42 had the presence of larvae. The container index was 24.4%, the housing index was
43.6% and the Breteau index was 59.1%. Among the significant differences between the urban and rural areas, it was evident
that in the urban area there are more hatcheries of artificial containers and more presence of larvae.
Conclusions. In the municipality of Nuqui there is a very high percentage of homes (98%) with artificial mosquito breeding
sites. It is noteworthy that we did not find mosquitoes of the genus
Anopheles in the selected sample. It is important to educate
and motivate the community to carry out the identification-elimination-modification of these vector breeding sites; in addition to
maintaining constant entomological surveillance to identify and reduce the risks of transmission of tropical diseases.
