ABSTRACT
Onychomycosis is frequently caused by dermatophyte but some non-dermatophytic moulds like
Aspergillus
sp., can also be involved. We report nine cases of onychomycosis due to
Aspergillus species diagnosed in two
different dermatologic centers in Mexico City and in Mérida, Yucatán. All patients were females with
an age ranged from 13 to 79 years old, with higher incidence in the fourth decade of life. The clinical features
were subungueal keratosis in six patients and onycholysis in five. History ranged from three weeks to 21 years.
The koh was positive in nine patients, with aspergillar heads observed in two cases and in the other cases hyphae
and/or spores. The isolated agents were
A. Terreus in three cases,
A. Flavus in two cases,
A. Niger in two cases,
A. Versicolor
in one case and
Aspergillus sp. in two more cases; one of them had two isolated agents:
A. Terreus and
A.
Niger. Treatment and follow-up was completed in four patients, one of them responded to oral itraconazol, one
to topical bifonazole-urea, another to the combination of both and one more to surgical nail avulsion.
