Proteinases in the vagina and anti-Trichomonas vaginalis proteins antibodies in sera of patients with active Trichomonosis

ABSTRACT
Trichomonosis is one of the most common human sexually transmitted disease in the world. The incidence of this disease has increased in spite of the control and prevention policies due to the AIDS epidemic. The problem could be greater than what we see due to the lack of a good diagnostic method and also because more than 50% of patients are asymptomatic. In this work we analyzed vaginal washes by substrate gel electrophoresis and sera by immunoprecipitation and Western blot assays from 30 Mexican patients with clinical diagnosis of trichomonosis, in order to detect proteinases and antibodies to trichomonad proteins, respectively. We found a relationship between the presence of trichomonad proteinases in vaginal secretions and antibodies to trichomonad proteins and proteinases in sera on the samples from the nine patients with culturepositive trichomonosis. These data will help to evaluate the potential of some of these molecules in a diagnostic method to detect active trichomonosis.
