ABSTRACT
There is a relationship between dental and chronological age that can be used to estimate an individual's age. The need for age estimation in both living and deceased people has currently increased. The most widely used and reliable method is that of Demirjian. The objective of this study was to To determine the effectiveness of the Demirjian method on mandibular third molars for the estimation of chronological age. A total of 862 digital orthopantomographies were selected of patients between 8 and 30 years of age were selected. Design of the transversal, observational and descriptive study, in which the Demirjian method was used for the estimation of dental age. Of the 489 women (59.2 %) and 337 men (40.1 %) the stages with the highest coincidence for OD 38 and 48 were H (51%), D (13.6%), 0 (5.8%) and the lowest coincidence B (36). When stage H was analyzed in relation to the condition of being 18 years old or older, it was found that 92.6% of women and 92.5% of men met this condition.
Conclusions: The Demirjian method is effective for estimating age in the Mexican population studied. Stage H may be a useful tool for establishing age of majority. No significant differences were observed compared to the left and right side of the jaw or in the different sexes.
