ABSTRACT
This essay has been divided in two parts: within the first part the evolution of recommended actions made for the integrated management of the malaria disease, vector control and environmental management is analysed. And the main policies adopted during the decades of the 70th, 80th and 90th are reviewed. Since the energetic crisis when the eradication strategy was practically abandoned different attempts have been done to develop adaptive strategies and tactics pursuing a realistic organization of actions directed to specific targets. The identification, hierarchy and stratification of risk factors involved in malaria transmission has been instrumental for the allocation of available resources with better efficiency, efficacy and equity. Ecological approaches are trying to make malaria management programs less dependable on residual pesticides. The need for malaria integral management within the general health services with a strong social participation remains the main challenge to end out with the malaria shadow. Transmission has been interrupted in extensive territories of the American Continent, nevertheless the general morbidity rates are still increasing.
