ABSTRACT
Introduction: Infectious endocarditis (IE) is a serious and potentially fatal disease. In our country there are few studies on the use of Meropenem in these patients.
Objective: To characterize the clinical-epidemiological variables in patients diagnosed with infectious En-docarditis treated with Meropenem.
Methodological design: A descriptive, cross-sectional observational study was conducted with 41 patients diagnosed with IE, treated with Meropenem, at the ¨Hermanos Ameijeiras¨ Clinical-Surgical Hospital; in the period between January 2006 and January 2018. Descriptive statistics were used, the mean, standard deviation and percentages were calculated.
Results: The mean age was 56.6 ± 17.1 years, predominantly the age group of 50 to 69 years (43.9%), infective endocarditis in the left native valve (43.9) and Staphylococcus as a germ more frequent (43.9%). It was found as predisposing factors more linked to IE, acquired valvular disease (34.1%) and mechanical valve prostheses (31.7%); the oral route being the most frequent entrance door (36.6%). The complication rate was high (78%), with the majority of patients requiring surgical treatment; however, the number of deaths (26.8%) was lower, during clinical evolution.
Conclusions: Predisposing factors more related to IE, male sex, age between 50 and 69 years, acquired valvular disease and mechanical valve prostheses were found; the oral route being the most frequent entrance door. The complication rate was high due to the characteristics of the sample studied. The majority of patients required surgical intervention. Treatment with meropenem was beneficial in the management of these serious patients, with fewer patients who died during the clinical course.
