ABSTRACT
Temporomandibular disorders are a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the temporomandibular joint and the muscles that control the movement of the jaw. This study was conducted to declare the association of temporomandibular disorders with anxiety.
Objective Measure the degree of association of the Hamilton anxiety rating scale in the onset of temporomandibular disorders.
Materials and Method the study was conducted with a single group consisting of 150 participants. Students were selected from the third, fourth and fifth year of the dental career of Universidad Autónoma de Coahuila (104 women; 46 men) (mean age = 21.6 ± 2.3 and 22 ± 2.34 years) to answer 2 questionnaires on the Fonseca Index and the Hamilton anxiety scale to identify the presence of temporomandibular disorders and anxiety levels respectively.
Results According to the Fonseca anamnestic index, 45.33% of the students presented a mild degree of TTM. 18.67% had a moderate degree of TMD and only 2.67% had a severe degree of TMD. According to the results obtained by the Hamilton anxiety scale, 65.3% of the subjects presented a mild anxiety level, 9.33% with a moderate anxiety level and only 1.33% with a severe anxiety level. A positive correlation was found between TMD and anxiety.
Conclusion. There is no difference in age between men and women, women show higher rates of temporomandibular disorders, women have higher levels of anxiety, there is a positive correlation between the Fonseca anamnesic index and Hamilton anxiety rating scale.
