ABSTRACT

Since mid February the World Health Organization (WHO) has been actively working to confirm reports of outbreaks of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in southern Asia. SARS may be defined, as an acute, febrile, infectious and contagious illness, associated (in seriously cases) with severe pulmonary failure. It is caracterized by high fever, dry cough, dyspnea and frequently pulmonay infiltrates and hypoxemia. The world’s first recognized case of this disease occurred in Foshan, Province of Guandong, (continental China) on 16 November 2002. SARS is due to a new coronavirus, named by WHO “SARS virus”. The SARS virus is unlike any other known human or animal virus in the Coronavirus family. Presumably, this virus originated in animals and mutated or recombined fashion that permited it to infect, cause disease and pass from person to person. SARS has already become a global health hazard; its high infectivity is alarming and as of today cases have been reported from 28 countries. Diagnosis is based on clinical picture and the keys in combating this infection are early recognition, prompt isolation and appropriatetreatment.
This modest article is dedicated to the memory of a hero of the modern medicine: Dr. Carlo Urbani, who died of SARS and he was the first to identify this outbreak.
