ABSTRACT
Background: Molluscum contagiosum is an infectious disease of the skin caused by
a poxvirus. When the infection occurs in the genitals of adults it is considered a sexually
transmitted disease and is more frequent in patients with HIV. There are different types
of treatments of this dermatosis with conflicting results. A new topical treatment with
dimethyl sulfoxide combined with povidone-iodine has shown good efficacy against
this viral skin infection.
Clinical cases: A 63-year-old male patient who for two years had suffered from
dermal lesions in the form of papules 2 to 3 mm in diameter and 1 or 2 mm high,
sessile, skin-colored, umbilicated in the center of the vertex of the lesion, which was
found on the penis, scrotum and pubis, without accompanying symptoms. Molluscum
contagiosum was diagnosed and dimethyl sulfoxide combined with povidone iodine
was prescribed, with which good results were obtained.
Conclusions: The clinical evidence of cure for molluscum contagiosum with the
combination of dimethyl sulfoxide and povidone iodine is a reality and clinical trials
should be carried out to determine its efficacy and safety.
