ABSTRACT
Background: Schwannomas are common benign tumors, identified in the temporal
bone, that come mainly from the vestibulocochlear nerve at the cerebellopontine angle
or internal auditory canal.
Clinical case: A 59-year-old female patient with progressive loss of hearing and dizziness,
refractory to pharmacological treatment. She was surgically treated for a lesion
in the middle ear, through a retroauricular approach, and tympano-mastoidectomy,
with complete resection of a tumor from the tympanic branch of the glossopharyngeal
nerve. The histopathological report exposed neoplasm of neurogenic origin, which was
available in groups, compatible with a schwannoma.
Conclusions: The primary schwannoma of the middle ear is an extremely rare
cause of tumors in the middle ear, with at least 10 cases reported in the literature, so
this contribution is very important to know more about this type of injuries.
