Estudio comparativo de dos índices gingivales

RESUMEN
Objetivo: Evaluar la confiabilidad y pertinencia de los índices PMA de Schour y Massler y gingival de Löe y Sillness para medir la experiencia de gingivitis.
Material y métodos: Se llevó a cabo un estudio epidemiológico descriptivo y transversal. Los examinadores fueron calibrados de acuerdo con las condiciones y criterios establecidos para el IPMA y el IG. Para medir la correlación entre las observaciones de estos índices con las del examinador patrón, fue calculado el coeficiente de correlación de Spearman.
Resultados: La sensibilidad mostrada por el IPMA y por el IG fue alta, sin embargo la especificidad para ambos fue baja. En cuanto a la correlación con el examinador patrón, el IPMA no mostró ninguna dependencia, lo que no ocurrió con el IG ya que refirió mayor confiabilidad para medir la magnitud de la inflamación gingival.
Conclusiones: Tanto el IPMA como el IG pueden ser utilizados cuando el propósito del estudio fuera solamente medir la prevalencia o la incidencia. El IG es más confiable que el IPMA para medir la magnitud de la inflamación.
