Las bombas de calcio serca: su papel en la patogénesis tumoral e implicaciones clínicas

RESUMEN
El ion calcio (Ca
2+) es un segundo mensajero que controla una gran variedad de
procesos celulares, entre los cuales destacan aquellos que están alterados en células
cancerosas. Dentro de las proteínas involucradas en la homeostasis de Ca
2+ se
encuentran las ATPasas SERCA, que lo bombean desde el citosol hacia el lumen del
retículo endoplásmico para restaurar el estado de reposo. Los genes SERCA (
ATP2A1-
3) codifican para distintas isoformas funcionales de la proteína. La expresión
y/o función de SERCA se encuentra alterada en diversos tipos de cáncer, entre los
que se encuentran gástrico, colon, mama, pulmón, tiroides, hígado, oral y próstata,
entre otros. Sin embargo, aún se desconocen parte de los mecanismos que controlan
la expresión de SERCA tanto en condiciones fisiológicas como patológicas, así como
su papel en la carcinogénesis. Entender el rol de SERCA en este proceso podría llevarnos
a desarrollar mejores estrategias terapéuticas y de pronóstico para mejorar
el tratamiento de los distintos tipos de cáncer.
