Melioidosis en pediatría: potencial agente de bioterrorismo microbiológico

RESUMEN
La melioidosis es una enfermedad tropical ocasionada por el bacilo Gram-negativo
Burkholderia pseudomallei, transmitido
a través del suelo, es una enfermedad endémica en el norte de Australia y en el sureste asiático, y actualmente
se reconoce en lugares no endémicos, incluido México. El género
Burkholderia comprende más de 40 especies.
El presente trabajo es una revisión de conceptos elementales para la sospecha clínica y el diagnóstico por
laboratorio, para establecer un manejo oportuno dada su alta mortalidad. El cuadro clínico es muy similar a tuberculosis,
sepsis fulminante o neumonía de evolución rápida. Por su alta letalidad, existe un gran riesgo de que éste se haya
utilizado en bioterrorismo.
