ANTECEDENTES
La existencia de enfermedades emergentes y reemergentes ha generado
la alerta de los sistemas de salud mundiales en las últimas décadas con
capacidad de ser identificadas, estudiadas y emitir comunicados de
información con acciones de respuesta para ellas de manera global.
Los coronavirus son una familia de virus que habitualmente causan
infecciones respiratorias leves e intestinales en animales y humanos.
Se clasifican en cuatro géneros: alfa, beta, gamma y delta. Los coronavirus
humanos (HCoV) se encuentran en dos de estos géneros:
alfa-coronavirus y beta-coronavirus. No se consideraron altamente
patógenos para los humanos hasta el brote del síndrome respiratorio
agudo severo (SRAS) en 2002 y 2003. Años después del síndrome
respiratorio agudo severo, otro coronavirus altamente patógeno, el
coronavirus del síndrome respiratorio de Oriente Medio (MERS-CoV)
surgió en los países de esa región.
