El paciente adulto mayor en la Unidad de Terapia Intensiva. ¿Estamos preparados?

RESUMEN
El cambio demográfico de la población ha incrementado la demanda de recursos de salud. Los ingresos a la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos de pacientes adultos mayores han aumentado de manera significativa en los últimos años, lo que representa un incremento en el empleo de recursos e inversión. Debemos estar conscientes de que el adulto mayor requiere de un abordaje diferente en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos. Existe controversia en los criterios de ingreso, abordaje y manejo de estos enfermos en las Unidades de Cuidados Intensivos, lo que se debe a que no contamos con guías validadas y en práctica. Consciente del problema, el Colegio Mexicano de Medicina Crítica inició con un programa para enfrentar este nuevo reto.
