No hay duda de que los síntomas en la menopausia constituyen un importante problema para las mujeres maduras, pero aún no hay criterios uniformes para considerar cuáles son propios de ella o bien resultan del envejecimiento, el deterioro de la salud, factores psicosociales o del estilo de vida. Algunos autores consideran que los únicos síntomas verdaderamente propios de la menopausia son los vasomotores y los relacionados con la vaginitis atrófica, pues son los únicos síntomas asociados directamente con la ooforectomía que presentan alivio con estrógenos.
