Antología de los primeros estudios clínicos con hormonas hipotalámicas: relato de una exitosa colaboración internacional

RESUMEN
Se revisaron nuestros ensayos clínicos iniciales, efectuados en México por primera vez, con hormona liberadora de tirotropina (TRH) y con hormona liberadora de hormona luteinizante (LH-RH) también conocida como hormona liberadora de gonadotropinas (Gn-RH), tanto naturales como sintéticas. La administración de TRH altamente purificado de origen porcino, ocasionó en cretinos hipotiroideos un aumento en la secreción de tirotropina (TSH). En estudios subsecuentes con TRH sintético también se produjo un aumento significativo de TSH plasmático, tanto en hombres y mujeres normales, como en pacientes con hipotiroidismo primario y otros trastornos endocrinológicos. También se efectuaron estudios clínicos con LH-RH de origen porcino altamente purificado. Todos los sujetos con niveles basales normales de gonadotropinas en el suero, niveles bajos (hombres y mujeres pre-tratados con esteroides) o niveles elevados (v.g. mujeres posmenopáusicas), respondieron al LH-RH con liberación de LH y FSH. Los resultados de estos primeros estudios con LH-RH natural, fueron ratificados con el uso de LH-RH sintético. Estos estudios efectuados en México con TRH y LH-RH precedieron por un amplio margen a otros estudios similares. Más tarde también se efectuaron diversas investigaciones clínicas con agonistas y antagonistas de LH-RH. Se concluye que estas primeras investigaciones jugaron un papel importante para la introducción de las hormonas liberadoras hipotalámicas a la medicina clínica.
