RESUMEN
La ecuación que establece que la presión arterial resulta de multiplicar el gasto cardiaco por las resistencias periféricas totales, se antoja muy simple; sin embargo, es extremadamente compleja de aplicar desde el punto de vista biológico, están involucrados una serie grande de mecanismos biológicos, variados en su origen y en su interacción. Con el fin de estudiarlos y lograr una buena comprensión del lector, se han dividido considerando la rapidez y duración de su efecto en: Mecanismos rápidos. Son aquellos que actúan en segundos, entre los que están los nerviosos y los químicos. Mecanismos intermedios. El inicio de su efecto lo tenemos en minutos, es el grupo más numeroso y está representado por los humorales y los físicos. Mecanismos lentos. Son los de inicio más lento, pero de mayor duración, y está representado por la función del riñón y los líquidos corporales.
